Vitamin D

Vitamin D TestingVitamin D, also known as “the sunshine vitamin,” is a vital compound responsible for the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate.

Though it can be adequately synthesised through the absorption of sunlight, individuals who live in the regions with little sunlight in winter and summer months, and individuals who do not receive sufficient sunlight are prone to vitamin deficiencies and thus should supplement it into their diet in order to avoid its associated risks.

Many physicians now supplement their patients with Vitamin D in response to recent research linking a variety of diseases and general wellness to a vitamin deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency (levels measured below 32 ng/ml) does not manifest obvious symptoms but can increase the risk of serious diseases including flu, cardiovascular disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, osteoporosis, and multiple sclerosis.  In addition, an increased risk for strokes, diabetes (types 1 and 2), depression, and breast and colon cancers are closely linked to low vitamin levels.
