Fatty acids are essential to the construction of cell membranes as well as hormonal signalling. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are transformed into local mediators called eicosanoids. Eicosanoids regulate all stages of inflammation, including initiation, propagation and termination. This process is vital to the ability of the body’s immune system to repair and protect itself. Fatty acids are also crucial components of membranes and receptors that insure proper intracellular communication within the brain and nervous system. Reduced levels of certain facts can result in depression, hyperactivity, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, as well as early senility. In addition, pregnant and lactating mothers should have their fatty acids tested to ensure that children receive the fats needed for proper brain and nerve development. Too much fat can cause health problems.

The ratio of omega-6 to Omega-3 fats has increased dramatically due to the widespread use of vegetable oil, rising from about 4:1 at the beginning of the 20th century to about 20:1 at the present time. Some individuals with a healthy dietary balance of fatty acids may still have biochemical abnormalities that interfere with their ability to properly metabolise fats, therefore a more targeted supplementation is required.

The number of diseases who’s clinical course can be affected by fatty acid therapy is enormous. These include:

  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Arthralgias (joint pain)
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Senile neurological degeneration
  • Mental and behavioural disorders such as depression and ADHD
